How to Use the Clamshell Propagator
Here are step-by-step instructions on how to properly use your Clamshell Propagator.
Step 1: Wound the Stem
Using a pair of pliers, carefully remove a one inch segment of the bark and cambium layer from the stem. Be sure not to go too deep. To make removal of the bark easier, score the stem using a knife or wire cutters.
Step 2: Remove the Bark
Remove the bark and the cambium layer from the stem.
Step 3: Apply Rooting Hormone
Apply rooting hormone around the exposed stem (where you removed the bark and cambium layer) using a brush.
Step 4: Place Soil Disks and Add Water
Place a soil disk in each clamshell. Fill each clamshell with water and wait 5 minutes (or until all water is absorbed by the soil).
Step 5: Attach the Bottom Stopper
Attach the bottom stopper (the plastic ratchet tie) around the stem about 2” below the exposed stem. This prevents the clamshell propagator from sliding down the stem.
Step 6: Attach the Clamshell Propagator
Carefully attach the two clamshells around the stem, on top of the bottom stopper.
Step 7: Secure the Clamshell Propagator
You can secure the clamshell using four plastic ratchet ties or four twist ties like shown in the picture below.
